A Smart system only as smart as it needs to be
Smart devices have gone through their entry level phases and the technology has begun to mature. This in good for usability, prices, and overall operability. However, in some cases, there can be such a thing as "too smart."
Smart "systems" are the network connected collection of devices and services that is put together in a business or home that is interfunctional. Often with an "Assistant" debicecsnd system coordinating the whole shebang. Assistants like Alexa, Google Home, or even the Apple whatever it is. These are usually represented with a speaker and/or video component such as the Google Nest or Alexa Echo.
The "dumbest" smart devices operate as mostly standalone items that do simple tasks independent of other devices in the network. A doorlock that is controlled only at the door with a key, code, or fob perhaps. A smart thermostat that only does thermostat things when you give a voice command or operate it from a smartphone app. Things like that. The "dumb" setup offers the modern features if the new devices without doing much more than the least they're capable of.
When you want to up the "Smart" of your system devices, you set things up for interoperability. For example, when the door unlocks, or a motion sensor is set off, or a verbal command is given to the Assistant, a series of actions take place either simultaneously or in series. A lock unlocks as the thermostat increases slightly, and the lights in particular locations turn on. Maybe a TV turns on and coffee maker starts up as well.
These automations are like a script that the Assistants follow upon recognizing some input. But that's not the "smartest" they can get. They still require a command or established input before any of them begin.
The next level of smart is when pre-established triggers are recognized without a specific command given. That's where the appliances like refrigerators and coffee makers, ovens, and all kinds of other things come in. Once parameters are established, all it takes is for the anticipated "trigger" event or action to take place and certain functions or automations begin.
For example, in a fridge, once a certain number of a particular item reaches the established level or count, the refrigerator can order said item(s) online from a pre-set vendor. It doesn't need the app or voice command. It has it's orders and is just waiting for the requirements to kick into action. This level of Smart anticipates and executes without direct or specified command.
So, who really needs or wants a Smart system? In my experience, it's the people with a more immediate need for assistance in independent living. Seniors and those with certain special needs. They get the most out of the smart systems even if at only the "dumbest" levels. Though more and more, these folks are moving more into at least medium levels of networked Smart systems.
Rental property owners and managers are probably next. Often they aren't on-site and are looking for as much automation and remote access and control as needed or as can be obtained.
Finally, it's the tech enthusiasts and "busy" lifestyle people who just don't have the time or don't want to put in "unnecessary" effort into routine and boring tasks. These are the folks who usually want to establish the smartest system they can right from the beginning.
The "Smartest" devices and systems are at risk the most because they are "all on, all the time." Their exposure to the internet is constant. Setup of the basic internet and in-house network needs to be done properly and with forethought before installing ANY "Smart" devices or Assistants. Ensuring that a good firewall and a VPN are in place first will go a fair way to mitigating potential problems.
I install Smart devices for customers fairly often. Sometimes it's just putting in a single device. Sometimes a variety or multiple devices and configuring them into an established system. Sometimes setting up a whole new system from the "ground up". Being a computer network tech (I have both a Certificate and Associates degree based in Computer Networking), gives me a bit of an advantage in helping customers get the most out of these devices and systems.
