Delegate for a better run business
One if the great things about life in the U.S. is that pretty much anyone can start their own business. If one can get past unnecessary government hurdles, but that's a different topic.
At the same time, not everyone can run a business well after they start it. If we're honest about it, no one, absolutely no one, can be good at everything. One of the best things we can do when running a successful business is to be aware of and honest about our own strengths and weaknesses. Then we find others to delegate to who are strong where we are not so much.
Sadly, many of us don't do that and those businesses suffer, and often fail, because of it. It's sad because it's often preventable. Why does it happen? Many different reasons; ignorance, vanity, hubris. A LOT of hubris.
There are a lot of sayings that apply to the weak areas of running a business. "Counting pennies to lose dollars", is one. That's not just about money management either. It's about nitpicking details while missing out on the big picture as well.
Then there's good old, "the devil is in the details." Which is true. Details need to be minded, but, in a certain way so we don't end up mired in them. This is where good delegation comes in to play. You hire people to focus on those particular details or category if details that will do well and leave you, the primary decision maker, free to keep everything in perspective with that bigger picture.
A notable trait of successful owners and business people is to "hire people smarter than me." This one is where vanity and hubris hit the hardest. No one likes to admit they can't do it all where their own business is concerned. They see admitting someone else might be better at something and delegating as a personal failure instead of the brilliant management move that it can be.
Whether hiring an assistant as an employee or hiring a contractor to address the situation as needed, delegating can help you make better decisions and be more successful in the long run.
